50% faster delivery, and a multi-tenant design system.

Wealth Wizards built a multi-tenant design system, a portfolio of regulated products across three audiences, and a design operating model that the company kept after we left. New product design 50% faster, and new partner onboarding cut from weeks to a single day.

The client

Financial advice for everyone.

Wealth Wizards is the UK's first online independent financial adviser, founded in 2009 to make regulated advice accessible to everyone. Clients include top-tier UK banks, a major pension provider, and large employers across government and consumer brands.

The platform serves three audiences. Customers managing their own money. Advisers using the tools to advise clients. Partner firms white-labelling the journeys under their own brand.

The work happened inside one of the most heavily regulated digital experiences a customer can have. Every flow had to be defensible, every recommendation auditable, every interaction understandable to someone who had never used a financial product before.

The companies who could deliver regulated advice at low cost, across multiple brands, at the pace customers expected from consumer products, would set the standard.

Introduction to the Wealth Wizards platform
The partnership

The cost of growth scaled with growth.

When the partnership started, the product range had outgrown the team behind it. No in-house design capability. No design system. No shared product language.

Every product was reasoned from scratch. Every white-label integration took months of bespoke work. Every regulated journey carried small inconsistencies that, taken together, made the platform feel like a collection of related products rather than one coherent product.

The shape of the engagement

Two core objectives.

Deliver real products under real release pressure. And build the structures that would sustain delivery long after the team had left.

Up to five designers worked across the portfolio at any given time, with additional support for development, prototyping, and motion design when needed.

Engagement at a glance

3 years inside delivery.

  • Model Embedded subscription
  • Team size Up to 5 designers
  • Disciplines Design, prototyping, motion, dev
  • Cadence Continuous, not project-based

The cost compounded. Every new partner was a custom build. Every new audience meant relitigating decisions other audiences had already answered. The portfolio could grow, but the cost of growing it scaled with it.

The work

What we did.

Mellow Studio embedded into Wealth Wizards' product delivery as their design team, across thirteen products and three audiences, for forty-two months. The work was scoped as a long-term partnership, building the design practice the company kept after we left.

The goal was a multi-tenant design system that customer, adviser, and partner products could share, and a way of working that turned regulated journeys into a defensible, customer-friendly experience by default.

W · 01 · Foundation

A multi-tenant design system, built for white-labelling.

Tokens defined the surface layer partner brands could override. Components and patterns defined the structural layer that stayed consistent across every tenant. This separation is what made partner integrations fast and safe.

Partners could apply their brand without touching the regulated patterns underneath. What used to be a bespoke build for each new partner became a repeatable rollout.

A multi-tenant system

One language,
three brands.

Tokens vary by tenant — colour, type, radius. Components, spacing and behaviour stay constant across all of them.

Many products, one platform experience.

We designed 13 products across customer-facing tools, adviser platforms, and partner integrations: the Retirement Plan app, Investment Risk, Lump sum guidance, Investment Pathways, Equity Release tools, and an internal colleague tool.

Two opened new territory. Smart Scenarios let customers and advisers compare different financial futures side by side. The Retirement Plan proposition turned the company's most important journey into an end-to-end product. Both shipped without rebuilding the foundation.

W · 03 · Operating model

A design operating model, embedded in the team.

We worked in cross-functional product trios: PM, designer, engineer per product, end to end. User research ran through everything, across customers, advisers, and partner firms.

Once products were in production, we iterated on live data and built the documentation, usage rules, accessibility guidance, and adoption playbooks that let internal teams use the system without us in the room.

We helped shape the company's North Star: where the product should go, and how the design system, the regulated journeys, and the innovation work fit into it.

W · 04 · Flagship feature

Smart Scenarios, a flagship feature.

A feature that lets customers and advisers compare different financial futures side by side. The design problem was to make a multi-variable comparison feel like a guided decision rather than a spreadsheet.

The solution had to be defensible to regulators, useful to advisers, and understandable to customers who had never modelled a retirement before. The result is a feature Wealth Wizards could point to as a real difference from competitors.

W · 05 · Flagship product

Retirement Plan, a proposition with no equivalent.

We shaped the Retirement Plan proposition into an end-to-end product, moving it from a sequence of regulated steps into a coherent customer narrative.

The design work gave the proposition a single arc the customer could follow, with the regulated steps embedded rather than stacked. It became the flagship customer experience the company led with.
